The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is a large piece of land the size of about 800 rugby fields, filled with native flora and fauna. There are over 250 volunteers helping to get rid of pests.

They are also planning to build a huge stainless steel fence around the whole sanctuary to keep pests out so they can re-introduce new species like kiwi and kakapo. The fence is very, very pest-proof. Cats and possums can't get over by jumping because it has a metal guard over the top.

  • The fence will cost over $4,000,000
  • The fence will have an electric wire on top so that if a tree falls on it, it sends a message so a patrol can tell where it fell
  • The holes have to be smaller than the width of a pencil (7mm) or small mice can get through
  • The fence is buried underground so pests can't tunnel underneath
  • The fence will be over 14km long
History
The old dam at the bottom of the Brook Sanctuary used to collect the water for all of Nelson. It isn't used any more. New Zealand's first railway, built in 1860, also came down the valley from the chromite mines on Dun Mountain. The chromite was used to make dye for the cotton industry in England. Coal has also been mined in the Brook Valley.

The fence is nearly 2m high
The holes are less than 7mm wide
