The pests at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary are animals such as rats, weasels, feral cats, stoats and possums. There are lots of unique traps for all the different pests around the Sanctuary.

The main way they are going to get rid of pests is by building a huge steel fence to keep the pests out so the plants can grow and the birds can breed happily. For more info about the fence go to Sanctuary Info page.

Pests are one of the main problems in native forests. These are some of the reasons why:

  • They can wipe-out any native creatures such as native birds by stealing their eggs

  • The deer, goats and wild pigs would eat so much food that other creatures could not survive

  • The pests could breed so much that they would take over the birds and other native animals' habitats

  • Wasps are also a pest because they eat the honeydew that the birds eat

  • Plant pests are also a threat. There are not many plant pests in the Sanctuary but things like old man's beard, woolly nightshade and douglas fir are a problem near the Sanctuary entrance.

  • Stoats, rats and mice are big threats to the birds, particularly when the beech trees have lots of seeds (like this year).
